Redfern Legal Centre launches My Legal Mate

17 October 2019

Redfern Legal Centre launched a new and innovative legal advice app for international students called My Legal Mate on 8 October 2019. Macquarie University became the first tertiary institution to offer the legal advisory app to all 11,000 of its international students. The app is a great initiative to address the legal needs of students in an informative, engaging and easily accessibly manner.

The app offers multilingual legal advice to international students studying in NSW. The app uses videos to engage with students and provides instant legal information and advice on issues affecting international students including employment, housing, sexual assault and disputes with education providers. It is available in English, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, Thai and Vietnamese. My Legal Mate will be offered to education institutions on an annual subscription basis which will allow students to access it free of charge.

‘This is an innovative way to ensure international students can get instant access to tailored legal information and be empowered to take greater control if problems occur’, Sean Stimson, the head of Redfern Legal Centre’s International Student Service NSW said.

The development of the app is being funded by Study NSW, City of Sydney and Fair Work Ombudsman and created by Redfern Legal Centre and Practera. For further information please visit the Redfern Legal Centre website or contact mylegalmate@rlc.org.au
