Funding for Redfern Legal Centre international student service

Redfern Legal Centre logoStudyNSW is pleased to support the continuation of an important legal service for international students in NSW.

The Redfern Legal Centre's International Student service, which recommences today, provides free legal advice to international students who may want to learn more about the Australian legal system or may need support to protect their rights.

One of StudyNSW's key functions is to develop and support strategies and programs that improve the experiences of international students in NSW. "International students are guests in our country and we want to ensure they have the best experience possible" said Peter Mackey, Director of StudyNSW. "We want students to enjoy their study experience in NSW and this includes feeling safe and protected under our laws."

The majority of cases brought to the Redfern Legal Centre by international students have related to disputes about overcrowded accommodation and work rights but students can be reluctant to take action for fear it could have an effect on their visa.

This initiative was awarded $110,000 in funding as part of StudyNSW's Partner Projects funding round for 2015/16. The service has also received support from Western Sydney University and the law firms Fragomen and McCabes.
