2022 NSW International Student of the Year Award
The 2022 NSW International Student Awards winners have now been announced!
Angie Davina Tjandra (Indonesia)
UNSW Sydney
Angie is an Indonesian student at UNSW, studying as a Scientia PhD candidate in the School of Chemical Engineering. Her current research involves developing a colour-changing sensor that can detect early lung cancer from breath.
Angie has taken up a number of opportunities during her study, including as a postgraduate student ambassador at the NSW Institution of Chemical Engineers Joint Chemical Engineering Committee, a postgraduate student representative on the school’s industry advisory board, a university delegate for Royal Australian Chemical Institute Women in Chemistry, and an Indonesian student mentor.
From her vast array of achievements, Angie is most proud of her contribution as a Founder and President of the UNSW Chemical Engineering Research Society (CERS), which was recently shortlisted as a finalist in the 2022 IChemE Global Awards for the Public Engagement Award.
Angie plans on becoming a research and development scientist in a global company.
Jennifer Budimulia (Indonesia)
Western Sydney University
Jennifer is an Indonesian student at Western Sydney University studying medicine.
Originally from Jakarta, Jennifer chose to study abroad to experience and learn about the healthcare system in Australia. Since arriving, Jennifer developed a community-based mental health organisation for Indonesians called ‘Seribu Tujuan’ that aims to support Indonesians with mental health issues through education, prevention and treatment. Jennifer has spoken at several events and workshops about the importance of mental health and is proud to be able to contribute to breaking down the stigma surrounding this topic.
One of Jennifer’s goals is to grow Seribu Tujuan and increase accessibility to quality mental health care. She also plans to continue her psychiatry training so she can take a more hands-on approach to developing solutions for mental health care.
Salwa (Indonesia)
The University of Newcastle Australia
Salwa is an Indonesian student at the University of Newcastle studying a PhD in Education.
Salwa has applied her unique experience to address international student issues and promote cultural diversity on campus as a student representative within the university’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee. Salwa also volunteered with Batyr, a for-purpose preventative mental health charity, to raise awareness of mental health in young people. She served as a peer mentor for the NUmates International Student Support Program, and as a Gifting Day Ambassador, raising funds for various important initiatives around the university. She also teaches English to migrants and refugees at TAFE NSW. In 2022, Salwa was awarded the Newcastle Volunteer Services Award.
Salwa plans to continue developing her skills and reinvent herself as a teacher, while also fulfilling her long-time commitment to helping others and promoting inclusivity through volunteer work.
