Meet the 2019 NSW International Student Awards Finalists

19 September 2019

Outstanding NSW international students and organisations have been recognised with the announcement of finalists for the 2019 NSW International Student Awards.

NSW Treasury Director—Trade and International Education, Peter Mackey said the annual awards, managed by Study NSW, celebrate international students’ contributions to NSW society and reinforce the benefits of international education to the broader NSW community.

"From University of New England's Amrit Pal Kaur, who has actively volunteers for numerous community initiatives in Armidale, to Hunters Hill High School's Baiyang Hu who was elected School Captain and organises multicultural events for his community, these finalists embody the positive impact international students have on our cultural capital, our global networks, and our communities,” Mr Mackey said.

“International education is NSW’s biggest services export industry attracting over 260,000 international students last year.

“But the bigger picture contribution of international education to Australia is the chance for cultures to learn from each other for the overall betterment of society.

“These students have not only taken the opportunity of moving to NSW to gain a first class education, they have stepped outside their comfort zones to expand their experience beyond the classroom and enrich the lives of others.”

The twelve finalists come from diverse backgrounds and countries including China, India, Brazil, Vietnam, Germany, Chile, Spain and Sudan.

The NSW International Student of the Year Awards are for outstanding excellence and community contributions across Schools, Vocational Education and Training, English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) and Higher Education sectors.

The NSW International Student Community Engagement Awards recognises initiatives of organisations that help international students connect with NSW communities and covers the categories of Education Providers, and Business and Community.

Winners will be announced at Government House Sydney on Wednesday 2 October.
