"The breadth of this year’s finalists and the contributions they’ve made during a global pandemic has been inspiring. We have seen outstanding acts of kindness right across the sector, and we are pleased to be recognising their powerful contributions,” Ms West said.
“International education remains a vital economic sector for New South Wales but these awards also showcase the community value, with students and businesses truly going above and beyond in 2020. We have been truly #InThisTogether.”
“Our students have not only taken the opportunity of continuing their first-class education in NSW, they have looked beyond their own personal needs and sought ways to contribute to our larger society and enrich the lives of others.”
Education providers, businesses and the community have also stepped up substantially – a clear indication that, in New South Wales, international students are valued and cared for.
“It’s been wonderful to see the dedication and leadership shown in the international education sector – from students and business alike – as we’ve navigated 2020,” Ms West said.
The twelve finalists for the NSW International Student of the Year Awards come from diverse backgrounds and countries including Bangladesh, Brazil, China, England, Mozambique, Nepal, South Korea, United States and Vietnam – and represent all level of education in NSW.
The six finalists for the NSW International Student Community Engagement Awards supported the international student community across a range of areas including COVID-19 financial support, a program to enhance language skills, fostering community among students, food donations and helping empower independence and self-reliance.
Winners will be announced by Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC QC, Governor of New South Wales at Government House Sydney on Tuesday 8 December 2020.
