A free legal resource for international students in Sydney and NSW

To ensure international students understand their legal rights and can help protect themselves during COVID-19, the NSW Government and City of Sydney has made 70,000 downloads of multilingual app My Legal Mate available for free for international students.

How to access in two-easy steps

  1. Complete the Study NSW sign up form
  2. Practera will send you a ‘Welcome & Register’ email within 24 hours with a link to access the app

Understanding your legal rights is a very important part of protecting yourself. My Legal Mate offers international students in NSW instant access to confidential and free legal information, and answers to commonly asked questions about the law in Australia. Watch the videos below to learn more.

My Legal Mate was launched in 2019, with the support of Study NSW, City of Sydney and the Fair Work Ombudsman. My Legal Mate was created by Redfern Legal Centre and is delivered on the Practera technology software platform.

Eligibility criteria

  • Current international students enrolled to study and residing in NSW
  • International students who have recently graduated from a NSW education provider
  • Current holders of subclass 500, 408 and 485 visas

Study NSW is collecting your personal information for the purposes of:

  • Processing your application for access to the My Legal Mate app
  • Contacting you to discuss the outcome of your application
  • Providing you with information and guidance
  • Contacting you for the purpose of processing and auditing your application
  • Reporting uptake and program quality
  • Other directly related purposes.

Even though you are not required by law to provide the above information, if you do not provide any relevant information when requested, your application may be rejected, or delayed, if the information is necessary to make a decision on your application.

Study NSW will not provide your personal information to any other third parties, with the exception of Practera, for any purposes not already stated in this privacy statement, or to which you have not otherwise consented, unless Study NSW is required, or authorised, by law to do so.

Study NSW may share de-identified information for research and statistical purposes. De-identified information and aggregate data will be provided to third parties outside of Study NSW.

Study NSW will take reasonable security measures to protect your personal information from loss, unauthorised access, use, modification, disclosure or other misuse.
