The UTS SOUL Award program provides students with opportunities to develop their ethical leadership, social justice, and change-making skills.
During the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, volunteering dropped by over 65 per cent. In response, UTS SOUL engaged experiential learning platform, Practera, to collaborate and develop a For-Purpose Opportunity Accelerator. The accelerator provided the SOUL program with a way to pivot, offering opportunities for students to engage with the not-for-profit sector in a meaningful way during a time of crisis and develop their skills while providing not-for-profit organisations with access to volunteers to work on problem areas that they defined.
While initially a pilot, UTS SOUL and Practera have agreed to continue the program beyond COVID-19, and in the next three years will support students to become social justice advocates and leaders through the SOUL Award and Badge program.
PASH (People Advocating for Sexual Health) is a peer-education program upskilling students to be able to confidently talk about sexual health with their peers.
Poor sexual and reproductive health literacy is recognised as a key concern for international students. By normalising conversations about sexual health, the importance of regular STI testing, and discussions around affirmative consent, PASH helps normalise testing and improve the likelihood of students having healthy relationships.
PASH peers have been part of the Health Advisory Group for the Study NSW-funded International Student Health Hub, led the development of a Sexual Health and Consent learning module in partnership with NSW Health STI Programs Unit, co-created the SEXtember festival and ran sexual health training with UNSW Global. The program was also one of the pilot testing sites for the NSW Health SHAPE (Sexual Health and Peer Education) toolkits.
PASH aims to continue growing and developing, embedding more PASH peers within student accommodation across UNSW.
In a time when borders were closed and student mobility was at a standstill, the Virtual Internship Program at the University of Sydney (USYD) enabled students to gain valuable experience in an Australian workplace.
Running for eight weeks between May and July 2021, the program placed students from USYD partner universities in Europe and the USA in virtual internships with businesses in Sydney.
Adapting quickly from traditional workplace experiences, this new program model enabled students to gain fantastic global experiences through virtual delivery, breaking down accessibility barriers.
While international students are now able to return in-person, the team continue to deliver the Virtual Internship Program and integrating it into the in-person internship program.
