STUDYNSW BOOSTS PARTNERSHIP FUNDING FOR 2017-18

StudyNSW has announced that it is partnering with 10 organisations on projects to support and engage with the state’s international students.

Minister for Trade and Industry Niall Blair said the NSW Government is working with education sector partners to deliver a range of projects for international students designed to improve their experience while studying in NSW.

“The 10 partner initiatives will get a total of $359,000 in co-funding from StudyNSW to support international students in areas outside of their day-to-day academic life.

“We want to send a strong message that NSW is the most welcoming place to live, learn, work and play for international students.”

“We’re dedicated to providing international students in NSW with valuable programs like these that leave lasting memories of their time in the state.

“With more than 291,000 international students enrolling to study in NSW last year alone, it's important we continue to enhance student experiences with a diverse range of activities on offer,” Mr Blair said.

The funding for 2017-18 goes towards twice as many projects as last year and will reinforce NSW’s commitment to the sector.

The funding will build on the success of previous projects and contribute to new projects including a NSW Police student ambassador program, a series of cricket games and other activities to support mental health and wellbeing for international students, and a range of work experience opportunities.

International education is NSW's largest services export and second largest export overall, worth over $8 billion to the economy and supporting over 46,000 NSW jobs.

STUDYNSW SUPPORTED PARTNER PROJECTS FOR 2017-18

  • Australian Catholic University (ACU): $48,620 in co-funding to deliver Interchange 2018 – a four week Inter-university Work Integrated Learning (WIL) type program where over 250 students learn by solving real world problems. Previously led by the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), various forms of the Interchange program have been successfully delivered through a partnership among 8 NSW universities.
  • NSW Police Force: $11,000 in co-funding to deliver the NSW Police Force Student Ambassador Program to educate international student representatives who will take on a role as ambassadors for NSW Police.
  • English Australia: $9,075 in co-funding to develop a guide to best practice in international student mental health.
  • Southern Cross University (SCU): $41,800 in co-funding to deliver the “Volunteer Connect Work Integrated Learning” program which will equip 100 international students in their first semester with key skills, industry mentors and 15 hours workplace experience.
  • Intersective – NSW Global Scope: $60,500 in co-funding to deliver NSW Global Scope Regional Clusters for 100 international students places in real world, 3-6 week business projects.
  • New South Wales Cricket Association in conjunction with the Sydney Sixers: $60,500 in co-funding to deliver Sixers Smash – a series of cricket events for international and domestic students in 4 locations across NSW.
  • University of New England (UNE): $44,000 in co-funding to continue supporting the Northern Tablelands International Community Partnership Project (aka The Hub) – a referral service with a range of health and wellbeing programs for international students, their families and new arrivals.
  • Edex Pty Ltd: $12,100 in co-funding to deliver SYMPLED: a symposium for leadership in education recruitment. This event for approximately 190 participants will focus on the current and future state of international student recruitment.
  • University of Newcastle (UON): $60,500 in co-funding to develop “Upskill through WIL”: A multi-staged Work Integrated Learning (WIL) project to engage international students in a regional area through brokering WIL and workplace opportunities, training for students, and workshops for industry partners.
  • Council of International Students Australia (CISA): $11,000 in co-funding to support the editing and dissemination of a NSW Police safety video for international students to target current and future NSW based international students.
