Why Indonesia?

Indonesia’s economy is the largest in South-East Asia and the 16th largest in the world. Indonesia has a large youth population and growing middle class, driving increased demand for quality education.

Indonesian students see Australia as a study destination of choice, with 20% of all Indonesians who study overseas choosing Australia. Indonesia is NSW’s most important international education source market in South-East Asia, with enrolments in vocational education and training (VET) and higher education. Currently, 7,732 students from Indonesia are studying in NSW, making it the 5th largest cohort and accounting for half of all Indonesian students studying in Australia.

There is an opportunity to continue growing Indonesian student enrolments in NSW, with recent Navitas modelling predicting that the Indonesian international education market will grow from 54,000 to 82,000 globally by 2030, with 27% of students expected to come to Australia. NSW continues to have a strong reputation for quality education, employability, and student support, with the recent Study Australia International Student Sentiment Survey finding that 81% of Indonesian students currently studying in Australia have a strong positive sentiment towards the state.

The NSW Government has expanded its international network, with Indonesia the first country to have a dedicated education-focussed position. These roles promote NSW as the best place in Australia to study, live and work. The NSW Education Expo will provide a comprehensive program to raise awareness in Indonesia of the quality of NSW education and will include presentations from NSW education providers and education related businesses.

Program details

The Expo will consist of various events and activities for different target audiences to maximise engagement.

NSW participants will be able to choose the activities that align with their objectives. However, some activities (such as delivering workshop/seminars) will have limited slots and the NSW Government’s Department of Enterprise, Investment and Trade will select from the applications received based on the needs of the target audience.

The Expo will be an in-person event and will require NSW education providers and/or their in-market representatives to be physically present in Jakarta, Indonesia. That said, there may be elements that can also be extended to an online audience.

All participants will be required to attend the NSW Education Expo day on Saturday 27 May.

The program outline below is indicative and subject to change.

Schedule of events

THURSDAY 25 MAY 2023

International School Visit
9:30AM – 12:00PM

Target Indonesia audience: Year 10-12 students and their caretakers

This event will be conducted in collaboration with a local international school in Jakarta that will  host the event on their campus. NSW education providers are likely to be allocated tables to display their programs and consult prospective students and/or parents from the host school. In parallel, NSW Education providers interested in participating in this segment may be invited to conduct seminars/workshops (topics will be discussed in collaboration with the host school). The host school will promote the event to their students and parents’ association. If the host school is part of a chain of schools, they may invite students from other schools under their group.

NSW Participants: This event is suitable for NSW Education providers targeting high school students to promote their undergraduate programs or relevant education products.

Local University Visit, campus tour and workshop
2:00PM - 4:00PM

Target Indonesia audience: Undergraduate students

This event will be conducted in collaboration with a local university in Jakarta (TBC) who will host the NSW Education Expo at their campus. The host university might want to also offer a campus tour and provide presentations that highlight their international collaborations. Unlike the school visit component of the Expo, a mini-exhibition is less likely to be held at a local university host. Instead, thematic workshops and seminars will be conducted. The topic(s) will be discussed based on the needs of the local university host and the capabilities of NSW education providers.

NSW Participants: This event is suitable for NSW Education providers targeting undergraduate students to promote their postgraduate programs or relevant education products.

FRIDAY 26 MAY 2023

Study NSW School Counsellors Seminar and Networking Lunch
9:00AM - 1:30PM

Target Indonesia audience: School counsellors and principals

This event will be a capacity building initiative for Indonesian school counsellors to demonstrate NSW’s education excellence in action, rather than by direct marketing.

School Counsellors are in influential (not decision-making) positions for students looking to study overseas. In view of this, the content required for this event will be focused on capacity building for Indonesian school counsellors and must avoid any hard-selling components from NSW education providers. The aim of this event is to demonstrate NSW’s education excellence and to equip school counsellors to guide their students when choosing NSW as their study destination. The needs for this segment might be more technical (e.g. university application guidance, personal statement preparation). If possible, this event will be conducted in hybrid mode (hotel in Central Jakarta and online).

NSW Participants: NSW Education providers who are interested in delivering seminars in this segment are asked to indicate in their application, their preferred area of interest based on the tentative program below.

The seminar will only be attended by NSW education providers who will deliver presentations however the networking lunch will be open to all NSW Education providers to attend.
