What advice do you have for other international students?

As an international student, you're special – you come from a different background and culture. I believe it's important to follow your dreams. Don’t limit your challenges and challenge your limits! I am proud of what I'm doing and I love every moment at university and the airport. I strongly encourage you to do what you like. It doesn't matter whether it's volunteering, an internship or even a paid job. By doing what you love, you'll gain hands on experience and understand yourself better.

What opportunities has studying in NSW given to you?

I’ve wanted to study aviation since high school but later realised that no universities in Hong Kong were offering a proper, well recognised undergraduate program. I did some research and learnt that UNSW Aviation offers such program to undergraduates. I came to Sydney in 2016 to complete a Diploma of Commerce and was accepted to UNSW in 2017.

After I started uni, I did research on volunteering at Sydney Airport and came across the International Student Welcome Desk program, where I became a crew member and later a team leader. I love the program as it strengthens my leadership, communication, interpersonal and customer service skills. I enjoyed every moment at the airport so I decided to join the team of Beach Safety Advisors, which is a pathway program partnered with Surf Life Saving NSW, enhancing beach safety awareness of international students and tourists. I graduated from the welcome desk program in early 2019. As I wanted to gain more experience and knowledge in airport operations, I applied to become an Airport Ambassador (Blue Jacket).

Fun fact

I have been a huge fan of aviation since I was small. I provided free entertainment to fellow passengers on a plane from Hong Kong to Sydney by singing to them when I was four. I love spending my birthdays at the airport and always fly indirect so that I can stop at different airports around the world.

What has been your favourite experience in NSW?

My favourite experience was volunteering at Vivid Sydney 2018. I am absolutely amazed by the creativity and ideas of the festival. I was the Installation Assistant, where I had the chance to interact with guests, explaining the ideas and background of each installation. It was cold and it rained badly but the smiles, chats and appreciation from patrons kept me warm. I am volunteering at Vivid Sydney again in 2019!
